Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola aims measured dig at Arsene Wenger over Raheem Sterling dive comments: 'Maybe he will say that is a penalty'

  • The Citizens sealed an 18th straight win with a comeback against Huddersfield
  • Raheem Sterling earned a penalty to help Manchester City back into the match
  • He was accused of cheating by Arsene Wenger after City's 3-1 defeat of Arsenal
  • Huddersfield 1-2 Manchester City: Sterling shines for resilient Citizens

Pep Guardiola aimed a measured dig at Arsene Wenger as Raheem Sterling broke his goalscoring record with a late winner at Huddersfield.
Sterling - whose 12th of the season means his haul this campaign already betters any other - changed the landscape of a testing afternoon for Manchester City.
The 22-year-old earlier won a penalty when fouled by Huddersfield’s Scott Malone and Guardiola believes he can become the complete player.

Pep Guardiola challenged Arsene Wenger to admit Raheem Sterling had earned a penalty

‘Maybe Arsene will say that is a penalty,’ Guardiola said after the Arsenal manager suggested Sterling ‘dives well’.
‘The penalty is more than clear. I'm impressed. He's young and he can improve. If he wants to learn then we'll be there to help him.’
Sterling has scored one more than Sergio Aguero, who netted the spot kick after Nicolas Otamendi’s own goal had seen City go into half-time behind.
The England international’s 84th-minute winner is the fourth time he has scored in the final 10 minutes of matches this season, earning City an added seven points across the Premier League and in Europe.
‘He's a winning player,’ Guardiola added. ‘Before he made good actions but now he is winning games. We're in November and he's already broken the record. He’s top but not only with goals.’
City’s 37 points from 13 matches is the highest ever recorded in the Premier League and they became the first top-flight club in history to win 11 consecutive away matches.

The forward was clearly pulled back by Jonathan Hogg of Huddersfield to earn a penalty

The second-half turnaround was also the first time since 1996 that City have won a league game when losing at the break. When told that, Guardiola replied: ‘Ostia (f***)!’
The Catalan also insisted City cannot go unbeaten, despite winning 18 matches on the trot - and revealed the victory in Yorkshire gave him more pleasure than some thrashings handed out this term.
‘It's impossible to finish unbeaten,’ he added. ‘We have to live this situation, when we're in trouble. We spoke in the locker room about how we need this situation to happen.
‘To win the Premier League you have to live this. I said don't give up, be positive all the time, be focused on what you have to do. You fight to avoid losing the games.

The England international saw another legitimate claim for a penalty turned down earlier

‘We played a real Premier League game today, the winter has come, and it was tough. We did it. When you win comfortably people say very nice words but that isn't the reality.
‘I cannot remember one team, of Sir Alex (Ferguson) at United or Arsenal, when they win four or five every week.’
Rajvir van la Parra saw red after full-time for raising his hands to Leroy Sane during a heated afternoon which included a row between the Huddersfield bench and Kyle Walker.
But David Wagner refused to criticise referee Craig Pawson: ‘I think the referee has done his job. I’ve not seen anything to complain about.
‘The referee told me to calm down but to be honest I was quite calm over the majority of the time. There is no doubt from me that we can compete.
‘We looked solid, but unfortunately not in every single second. A team like Man City is able to punish you if you are unable to show this in every single second.’

Guardiola says Sterling has vastly improved this season and hailed his performance
